Happy 100th Birthday Bauhaus

Bauhaus_Lines_003

The Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925. Between 1925 and 1926, Walter Gropius, who founded it, along with students and teachers – well, he couldn’t have done it on his own, created the Dessau University building, an icon of modern architecture and one of the most influential buildings of the 20th century.

Purpose built ‘temples’ to art production are tricky. One is put in mind of Boulez’s IRCAM which, I don’t know; I’m not sure it was a success.

The Bauhaus was though. The philosophy was that art and design to the highest standard could enrich and improve people’s lives. I’m all for that. But it wasn’t a new idea. William Morris felt the same way and I am deeply indebted to them both – Gropius and all the artists who pursued their vision there, as collaborators, participants in a great idea, as a team; and Morris and all the people he inspired by his leadership down at Merton Abbey, not far from here.

I pay tribute to this great concept and those who have worked so hard to extend it and to give it a voice. My ‘Bauhaus’ cufflink, like most of my work, is a tribute. And I hope, or have faith might be a better way of putting it, that I too can play a part in enriching people’s lives through the authenticity of real design
