This shirt, apart from being a rather beautiful thing, is notable for its colour combinations. Blue with brown is classically thought to be 'dissonant'. We have a primary - blue and the true, or painter's tertiary - brown, which results from an equal mix of the three primaries. These colours are a long way from each other on the colour wheel and so we think of them as dissonant. But, it a rather lovely dissonance even so. The fish are painted simply, but carefully with subtle gradations of tone and strong, confident lines. But we also have a crustacean or two for company! The ground is a pale blue and there is an intriguing kind of visual push-pull of earthy and aqueous tones. The effect is rather expansive and serene. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
